japanese swordsword class

The Japanese sword art of Iaido concentrates on the drawing of the sword from the scabbard followed by a cut and a resheathe, all executed in quick, precise movement. Chutoku Ryu Iaido/Iaijutsu provides training in classical Japanese swordsmanship primarily through the use of prearranged, choreographed exercises or forms called kataKatas serve to reinforce and combine the basic stances, draws, cuts, and principles of movement learned throughout training.  While concepts and movements may appear simple, this art is actually quite complex, replete with detail and nuance.

Students train with dulled steel/alloy blades in Iaido, but use wooden bokkens for the Iaijutsu/Kenjutsu portion of the program.  Kenjutsu and Kendo offer training in realistic and practical application of sword fighting techniques. This art teaches the principles of blade and body movement, attack and defense, and incorporates strategic and tactical thought.  When practicing Kendo, students wear traditional Japanese armor (bogu), allowing for safe, full (but controlled) contact with bamboo shinai.

The demands of training are as much mental as physical, so this art is open to adults, teens 16 years old and above, but not younger children.  Prospective students must get permission to enroll in this class.

CAUTION: Karate For Christ® strongly cautions anyone from attempting to “self-train” in ANY sword art through books or videos. Proper, qualified instruction is essential not only for proper form and technique, but also more importantly to help ensure the safety of the practitioner and those around them. A sword is a deadly weapon and serious or fatal injury may arise with improper or careless use.
